ABSTRACT

Background: To compare and analyze the presence of CD4+ and CD8 + lymphocyte infiltrates in Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) tissue versus adjacent tissue and their clinical significance. Methods: We enrolled a total of 152 patients diagnosed with OSCC, all of whom had confirmed diagnoses through pathological reports. Clinical and demographics data were extracted from medical records. Tissue microarrays were constructed and immunohistochemical staining for CD4 and CD8 was performed. Findings: The average number of infiltrating CD4+ T cells in OSCC tumor tissue was 1026.22±1163.36 cells/mm2, which did not significantly differ from the count in adjacent tissue, which was 1163.36±1013.23 cells/mm2. However, the number of CD8+ T cell infiltration in tumor tissue was significantly higher than in adjacent tissue (655.25±705.70 vs 504.56±659.26 cells/mm2, p = 0.026). We observed that, among patients who consumed alcohol, the CD4+ T cell infiltration in tumor tissue being significantly lower than that in adjacent tissue (P=0.036). Moreover, the CD8+ T cell infiltration in cancer tissue was significantly higher than in adjacent tissue for T1-2 patients (p=0.005). Patients with higher CD8+ T cell in tumor tissue exhibited significantly improved overall survival (p = 0.043). Multivariate analyses revealed that alcohol consumption had a significant impact on the number of CD4+T lymphocytes in tumor tissue (OR = 0.403, P = 0.033) while T stage was the independent factor affecting CD8+ T lymphocyte infiltration in tumor tissue (OR = 0.459, P = 0.031). Interpretation: OSCC patients with a higher number of CD8+ T lymphocyte infiltration in tumor tissue exhibited an improved prognosis.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: Understanding factors that influence blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is crucial for managing hyperglycemia. Currently, there is no standardized interpretation method for glucagon levels in oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). This study aims to assess the relationship between the lowest glucagon/highest C-peptide ratio (Lglc/Hcp) in OGTT and glucose control levels in T2DM. Patients and Methods: Clinical data from 120 patients with T2DM were examined to compare the correlations of Lglc/Hcp and other pancreatic islet function-associated indices with fasting blood glucose (G0), glucose at 120 minutes in OGTT (G120), hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), and the area under the glucose curve in OGTT (AUCglu). Additionally, the study investigated difference in Lglc/Hcp between patient groups based on the highest blood glucose levels (Hglu) in OGTT (Hglu ≥ 16.7 mmol/L vs Hglu < 16.7 mmol/L). Results: The generalized linear model suggested that Lglc/Hcp significantly correlated with G0 (B = 0.85, P < 0.001), G120(B = 1.46, P < 0.001), HbA1c (B = 0.67, P < 0.001), and AUCglu (B = 3.46, P < 0.001). This correlation surpassed C-peptide and glucagon-related parameters, even after adjusting for confounding factors. Furthermore, Lglc/Hcp was notably higher in patients with Hglu ≥ 16.7 mmol/L compared to those with Hglu < 16.7 mmol/L (Z = -3.71, p < 0.001). Conclusion: Lglc/Hcp in OGTT closely relates to blood glucose control in patients with T2DM, potentially reflecting the overall pancreatic islet function in regulating glucose levels. Moreover, inhibiting glucagon secretion may be a crucial consideration for patients requiring insulin treatment.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Brassica napus, a hybrid resulting from the crossing of Brassica rapa and Brassica oleracea, is one of the most important oil crops. Despite its significance, B. napus productivity faces substantial challenges due to heavy metal stress, especially in response to cadmium (Cd), which poses a significant threat among heavy metals. Natural resistance-associated macrophage proteins (NRAMPs) play pivotal roles in Cd uptake and transport within plants. However, our understanding of the role of BnNRAMPs in B. napus is limited. Thus, this study aimed to conduct genome-wide identification and bioinformatics analysis of three Brassica species: B. napus, B. rapa, and B. oleracea. RESULTS: A total of 37 NRAMPs were identified across the three Brassica species and classified into two distinct subfamilies based on evolutionary relationships. Conservative motif analysis revealed that motif 6 and motif 8 might significantly contribute to the differentiation between subfamily I and subfamily II within Brassica species. Evolutionary analyses and chromosome mapping revealed a reduction in the NRAMP gene family during B. napus evolutionary history, resulting in the loss of an orthologous gene derived from BoNRAMP3.2. Cis-acting element analysis suggested potential regulation of the NRAMP gene family by specific plant hormones, such as abscisic acid (ABA) and methyl jasmonate (MeJA). However, gene expression pattern analyses under hormonal or stress treatments indicated limited responsiveness of the NRAMP gene family to these treatments, warranting further experimental validation. Under Cd stress in B. napus, expression pattern analysis of the NRAMP gene family revealed a decrease in the expression levels of most BnNRAMP genes with increasing Cd concentrations. Notably, BnNRAMP5.1/5.2 exhibited a unique response pattern, being stimulated at low Cd concentrations and inhibited at high Cd concentrations, suggesting potential response mechanisms distinct from those of other NRAMP genes. CONCLUSIONS: In summary, this study indicates complex molecular dynamics within the NRAMP gene family under Cd stress, suggesting potential applications in enhancing plant resilience, particularly against Cd. The findings also offer valuable insights for further understanding the functionality and regulatory mechanisms of the NRAMP gene family.

ABSTRACT

The next-generation sequencing technologies application discovers novel genetic alterations frequently in pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). RAS signaling pathway mutations at the time of relapse ALL frequently appear as small subclones at the time of onset, which are considered as the drivers in ALL relapse. Whether subclones alterations in the RAS signaling pathway should be considered for risk group stratification of ALL treatment is not decided yet. In this work, we investigate the RAS signaling pathway mutation spectrum and the related prognosis in pediatric ALL. We employed an NGS panel comprising 220 genes. NGS results were collected from 202 pediatric ALL patients. 155 patients (76.7%) harbored at least one mutation. The incidences of RAS signaling pathway mutations are different significantly between T-ALL and B-ALL. In B-ALL, the RAS pathway is mostly involved, and NRAS (17.6%), KRAS (22.7%), and PTPN11 (7.7%) were the three most frequently mutated genes. Co-occurring mutations of CREBBP and NRAS, FLT3, or PTPN11 (p = 0.002, p = 0.009, and p = 0.003, respectively) were found in this cohort. The 3-year RFS rates for the RAS signaling pathway mutation-positive and negative cases was 76.5 % versus 89.7 % (p = 0.012). Four cases relapsed in the lately 3 years were RAS signaling pathway mutation-positive. RAS signaling pathway mutation is an important biomarker for poorer relapse-free survival in pediatric B-ALL patients despite good early MRD levels.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA) is a group of early-onset retinal degenerative disorders, resulting in blindness in children. This study aimed to describe the clinical and genetic characteristics of a cohort of patients with LCA and to investigate the retinal vascular characteristics in LCA patients. METHODS: Fifty-two children with LCA were included in the study. All patients underwent detailed ocular examinations. Electroretinography (ERG) was used to evaluate the retinal function. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) was used to assess the structure change of the retina for those patients who were able to cooperate very well. Panel-based next-generation sequencing was performed to identify pathogenic variants in genes associated with LCA. Diameters of the retinal vessels were measured using the EVision AI screening system with an artificial intelligence (AI) technique. An ultrasound Doppler was used to evaluate hemodynamic parameters, including peak systolic velocity (PSV), resistive index (RI), and pulsatility index (PI), in the ophthalmic, central retinal, posterior ciliary, carotid, and internal carotid as well as external carotid arteries in 12 patients aged from 3 to 14 years. RESULTS: We detected 75 pathogenic variants from ten genes of RPGRIP1, CEP290, GUCY2D, LCA5, AIPL1, CRB1, RPE65, CRX, RDH12, and TULP1, including 29 novel and 36 previously reported variants in 52 affected children with LCA, with the highest detective rate in RPGRIP1 (26.9%). Fundus appearance is diverse in patients with LCA, ranging from normal to severe peripheral or central retinopathy. Retinal vasculature was evaluated in 12 patients with different gene variants, showing narrowed arteries with an average diameter of 43.6 ± 3.8 µm compared to that of 51.7 ± 2.6 µm in the normal controls (P < 0.001, n = 12). Meanwhile, their hemodynamic parameters were changed as well in the ophthalmic artery (OA), with a decreased PSV (P = 0.0132, n = 12) and slightly increased PI (P = 0.0488, n = 12) compared to the normal controls. However, the hemodynamic parameters did not change significantly in the other vessels. CONCLUSIONS: Blood supply to the eyeball is predicted to be reduced in patients with LCA, presumably due to photoreceptor cell degeneration. The novel identified variants will expand the spectrum of variants in LCA-related genes and be useful for studying the molecular mechanisms of LCA.

ABSTRACT

Planar π-conjugated groups, like CO3, NO3, and BO3 triangles, are ideal functional units for designing birefringent materials due to their large optical anisotropy and wide band gap. The key point for designing birefringent crystals is to select appropriate functional building blocks (FBBs) and the proper arrangement mode. It is well known that the substitution strategy has proven to be a promising and accessible approach. In this work, alkali metals were chosen to regulate and control two different π-conjugated groups, CO3 and NO3, to build new compounds with large birefringence. Subsequently, three new compounds, Na3K6(CO3)3(NO3)2X·6H2O (X = NO3, Cl, Br), were successfully synthesized using the hydrothermal method. The aliovalent substitution between the [NO3]- anionic group and halogen anions [Cl]-/[Br]- has been achieved in these compounds. Na3K6(CO3)3(NO3)2X·6H2O feature the well-coplanar CO3 and NO3 groups in their crystal structure. This coplanar arrangement mode may effectively enhance the anisotropic polarizability of Na3K6(CO3)3(NO3)2X·6H2O. And their experimental birefringence can reach 0.094-0.131 at 546 nm. Diffuse reflectance spectra demonstrate that these compounds exhibit short ultraviolet (UV) absorption edges of ∼235 nm. Meanwhile, Na3K6(CO3)3(NO3)2X·6H2O also have an easily grown capacity under facile conditions. This work not only reports three new potential UV birefringent crystals but also provides a strategy to make the π-conjugated MO3 group coplanar.

ABSTRACT

The linear ubiquitin chain assembly complex (LUBAC) is the only known E3 ligase complex in which the ubiquitin-like (UBL) domains of SHARPIN and HOIL-1L interact with HOIP to determine the structural stability of LUBAC. The interactions between subunits within LUBAC have been a topic of extensive research. However, the impact of the LTM motif on the interaction between the UBL domains of SHARPIN and HOIL-1L with HOIP remains unclear. Here, we discover that the absence of the LTM motif in the AlphaFold2-predicted LUBAC structure alters the HOIP-UBA structure. We employ GeoPPI to calculate the changes in binding free energy (ΔG) caused by single-point mutations between subunits, simulating their protein-protein interactions. The results reveal that the presence of the LTM motif decreases the interaction between the UBL domains of SHARPIN and HOIL-1L with HOIP, leading to a decrease in the structural stability of LUBAC. Furthermore, using the AlphaFold2-predicted results, we find that HOIP (629‒695) and HOIP-UBA bind to both sides of HOIL-1L-UBL, respectively. The experiments of Gromacs molecular dynamics simulations, SPR and ITC demonstrate that the elongated domain formed by HOIP (629‒695) and HOIP-UBA, hereafter referred to as the HOIP (466‒695) structure, interacts with HOIL-1L-UBL to form a structurally stable complex. These findings illustrate the collaborative interaction between HOIP-UBA and HOIP (629‒695) with HOIL-1L-UBL, which influences the structural stability of LUBAC.

Classical theories of particle aggregation, such as Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO), do not explain recent observations of ion-specific effects or the complex concentration dependence for aggregation. Thus, here, we probe the molecular mechanisms by which selected alkali nitrate ions (Na+, K+, and NO3-) influence aggregation of the mineral boehmite (γ-AlOOH) nanoparticles. Nanoparticle aggregation was analyzed using classical molecular dynamics (CMD) simulations coupled with the metadynamics rare event approach for stoichiometric surface terminations of two boehmite crystal faces. Calculated free energy landscapes reveal how electrolyte ions alter aggregation on different crystal faces relative to pure water. Consistent with experimental observations, we find that adding an electrolyte significantly reduces the energy barrier for particle aggregation (∼3-4×). However, in this work, we show this is due to the ions disrupting interstitial water networks, and that aggregation between stoichiometric (010) basal-basal surfaces is more favorable than between (001) edge-edge surfaces (∼5-6×) due to the higher interfacial water densities on edge surfaces. The interfacial distances in the interlayer between aggregated particles with electrolytes (∼5-10 Å) are larger than those in pure water (a few Ångströms). Together, aggregation/disaggregation in salt solutions is predicted to be more reversible due to these lower energy barriers, but there is uncertainty on the magnitudes of the energies that lead to aggregation at the molecular scale. By analyzing the peak water densities of the first monolayer of interstitial water as a proxy for solvent ordering, we find that the extent of solvent ordering likely determines the structures of aggregated states as well as the energy barriers to move between them. The results suggest a path for developing a molecular-level basis to predict the synergies between ions and crystal faces that facilitate aggregation under given solution conditions. Such fundamental understanding could be applied extensively to the aggregation and precipitation utilization in the biological, pharmaceutical, materials design, environmental remediation, and geological regimes.

ABSTRACT

In this study, the encapsulation and structural characteristics of the self-assembled liposome formed by epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) were studied. According to the results, EGCG significantly increased the catalytic activity of ADH with a 33.33 % activation rate and the liposomes were able to entrap EGCG-ADH with an effectiveness of 88.94 %. The self-assembled monolayers had nanometer-sized particles, and the excellent self-assembled system was demonstrated by the low PDI value and high surface absolute potential. The scanning electron microscope showed that the self-assembled liposome was honeycomb, groove-shaped, and rough. The spectroscopic results showed that EGCG-ADH complex was formed through hydrogen bond, which changed the secondary structure of the liposome, and verified EGCG-ADH liposome system was successfully prepared. In vitro digestion experiments showed that the gastrointestinal tolerance and antioxidant activity of EGCG-ADH liposomes were significantly higher than those of free EGCG-ADH.

BACKGROUND: As the stages of the COVID-19 pandemic evolved, the symptoms of depression, anxiety, and insomnia have increasingly manifested among Chinese college students. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationships between these symptoms through network analysis among Chinese college students during COVID-19. METHOD: A three-wave cross-sectional survey was conducted at 22 colleges in Guangdong Province, involving 381,152 students during three specific time intervals: T1 (baseline, February 3 to 10, 2020), T2 (19 months after baseline, June 10 to 18, 2021), and T3 (37 months after baseline, March 15 to April 22, 2023). Depression (PHQ-9), anxiety (GAD-7), and insomnia (YSIS) were used separately. We analyzed two key network indices: "Expected influence" and "Bridge expected influence". Network stability was assessed through a case-dropping bootstrap program. RESULT: The effective sample sizes for the three periods were as follows: T1 - 164,101 (103,645 females, 63.2 %), T2 - 86,767 (52,146 females, 60.1 %), and T3 - 130,284 (76,720 females, 58.9 %). Across these three periods, the key central symptoms were "Fatigue" (PHQ4), "Restlessness" (GAD5), "Uncontrollable worrying" (GAD2), "Worry too much" (GAD3) and "Sleep insufficiency" (YSIS6). Notably, "Fatigue" (PHQ4), "Restlessness" (GAD5) and "Irritability" (GAD6) consistently served as bridge symptoms. In the T1 and T2 period, "Motor" (PHQ8) acted as a bridge symptom but weakened in T3. CONCLUSION: Throughout the three periods, the mental health issues among Chinese college students displayed characteristics of somatization within the depression-anxiety-insomnia comorbidity network. Over time, anxiety symptoms appeared to become more prominent. Consequently, this study highlights the importance of accurately identifying and promptly intervening in these core symptoms of mental health among college students, as these symptoms may evolve across different stages of a pandemic.

Background: HBV-specific T lymphocytes are pivotal in eliminating the hepatitis B virus (HBV) and regulating intrahepatic inflammatory reactions. Effective T cell responses curtail HBV infection; however, compromised immunity can result in persistent infection. Beyond the acute phase, the continued presence of antigens and inflammation leads to the increased expression of various inhibitory receptors, such as PD-1, CTLA-4, Tim-3, LAG3, 2B4, CD160, BTLA, and TIGIT. This escalates the dysfunction of and diminishes the immune and proliferative abilities of T cells. Methods: In this study, we reviewed English-language literature from PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus up to 9 July 2023. This paper aims to elucidate the inhibitory effects of these receptors on HBV-specific T lymphocytes and how immune function can be rejuvenated by obstructing the inhibitory receptor signaling pathway in chronic HBV patients. We also summarize the latest insights into related anti-HBV immunotherapy. Result: From 66 reviewed reports, we deduced that immunotherapy targeting inhibitory receptors on T cells is a reliable method to rejuvenate T cell immune responses in chronic HBV patients. However, comprehensive combination therapy strategies are essential for a functional cure. Conclusions: Targeting T cell suppressor receptors and combining immunotherapy with antiviral treatments may offer a promising approach towards achieving a functional cure, urging future research to prioritize effective combination therapeutic strategies for chronic HBV infection.

BACKGROUND: There is a need to develop and coordinate dementia care plans that use assistive technology for vulnerable groups such as immigrant populations. However, immigrant populations are seldom included in various stages of the development and implementation of assistive technology, which does not optimize technology acceptance. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to gain an in-depth understanding of the acceptance of a digital personal assistant, called Anne4Care, by older adult immigrants living with dementia in their own homes. METHODS: This study used a qualitative descriptive research design with naturalistic inquiry. A total of 13 older adults participated in this study. The participants were invited for 2 interviews. After an introduction of Anne4Care, the first interview examined the lives and needs of participants, their expectations, and previous experiences with assistive technology in daily life. Four months later, the second interview sought to understand facilitators and barriers, suggestions for modifications, and the role of health care professionals. Three semistructured interviews were conducted with health care professionals to examine the roles and challenges they experienced in the use and implementation of Anne4Care. Content analysis, using NVivo11, was performed on all transcripts. RESULTS: All 13 participants had an immigration background. There were 10 male and 3 female participants, with ages ranging from 52 to 83 years. Participants were diagnosed with an early-stage form of dementia or acquired brain injury. None of the older adult participants knew or used digital assistive technology at the beginning. They obtained assistance from health care professionals and family caregivers who explained and set up the technology. Four themes were found to be critical aspects of the acceptance of the digital personal assistant Anne4Care: (1) use of Anne4Care, (2) positive aspects of Anne4Care, (3) challenges with Anne4Care, and (4) expectations. Assistance at first increased the burden on health care professionals and families. After the initial effort, most health care professionals and families experienced that Anne4Care reduced their tasks and stress. Contributions of Anne4Care included companionship, help with daily tasks, and opportunities to communicate in multiple languages. On the other hand, some participants expressed anxiety toward the use of Anne4Care. Furthermore, the platform required an internet connection at home and Anne4Care could not be used outside the home. CONCLUSIONS: Although older adult immigrants living with dementia had no previous experience with digital assistive technology specifically, the acceptance of the digital personal assistant, called Anne4Care, by older adult immigrants living with dementia was rather high. The digital assistant can be further developed to allow for interactive conversations and for use outside of one's home. Participation of end users during various stages of the development, refinement, and implementation of health technology innovations is of utmost importance to maximize technology acceptance.

With the transformation and upgrading of industries, the environmental problems caused by industrial residual contaminated sites are becoming increasingly prominent. Based on actual investigation cases, this study analyzed the soil pollution status of a remaining sites of the copper and zinc rolling industry, and found that the pollutants exceeding the screening values included Cu, Ni, Zn, Pb, total petroleum hydrocarbons and 6 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon monomers. Based on traditional analysis methods such as the correlation coefficient and spatial distribution, combined with machine learning methods such as SOM + K-means, it is inferred that the heavy metal Zn/Pb may be mainly related to the production history of zinc rolling. Cu/Ni may be mainly originated from the production history of copper rolling. PAHs are mainly due to the incomplete combustion of fossil fuels in the melting equipment. TPH pollution is speculated to be related to oil leakage during the industrial use period and later period of vehicle parking. The results showed that traditional analysis methods can quickly identify the correlation between site pollutants, while SOM + K-means machine learning methods can further effectively extract complex hidden relationships in data and achieve in-depth mining of site monitoring data.

ABSTRACT

Acute kidney injury (AKI) poses a significant global public health challenge. Current methods for detecting AKI rely on monitoring changes in serum creatinine (Scr), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), urinary output and some commonly employed biomarkers. However, these indicators are usually neither specific nor sensitive to AKI, especially in cases of mild kidney injury. AKI is accompanied by severe inflammatory reactions, resulting in the upregulation of numerous inflammation-associated proteins in the plasma. Plasma biomarkers are a noninvasive method for detecting kidney injury, and to date, plasma inflammation-associated cytokines have not been adequately studied in AKI patients. The objective of our research was to identify novel inflammatory biomarkers for AKI. We utilized Olink proteomics to analyze the alterations in plasma inflammation-related proteins in the serum of healthy mice (n = 2) or mice treated with cisplatin (n = 6). Additionally, transcriptome datasets for the lipopolysaccharide (LPS), cisplatin, and ischemia‒reperfusion injury (IRI) groups were obtained from the National Center of Biotechnology Information (NCBI) Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. We calculated the intersection of differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) and genes (DEGs) from both datasets. In the Olink proteomics analysis, the AKI group had significantly greater levels of 11 DEPs than did the control group. In addition, 56 common upregulated DEGs were obtained from the transcriptome dataset. The expression of CXCL1 and TNFRSF12A overlapped across all the datasets. The transcription and protein expression levels of CXCL1 and TNFRSF12A were detected in vivo. The gene and protein levels of CXCL1 and TNFRSF12A were significantly increased in different AKI mouse models and clinical patients, suggesting that these genes and proteins could be potential specific biomarkers for the identification of AKI.

ABSTRACT

Viperin, also known as radical S-Adenosyl methionine domain containing 2 (RSAD2), is an IFN stimulated protein that plays crucial roles in innate immunity. Here, we identified a viperin gene from the koi carp (Cyprinus carpio) (kVip). The ORF of kVip is 1047 bp in length, encoding a polypeptide of 348 amino acids with neither signal peptide nor transmembrane protein. The predicted molecular weight is 40.37 kDa and the isoelectric point is 7.7. Multiple sequence alignment indicated that putative kVip contains a radical SAM superfamily domain and a conserved C-terminal region. kVip was highly expressed in the skin and spleen of healthy koi carps, and significantly stimulated in both natural and artificial CEV-infected koi carps. In vitro immune stimulation analysis showed that both extracellular and intracellular poly (I: C) or poly (dA: dT) caused a significant increase in kVip expression of spleen cells. Furthermore, intraperitoneal injection of recombinant kVip (rkVip) not only reduced the CEV load in the gills, but also improved the survival of koi carps following CEV challenge. Additionally, rkVip administration effectively regulated inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, IL-1ß, TNF-α, IL-10) and interferon-related molecules (cGAS, STING, MyD88, IFN-γ, IFN-α, IRF3 and IRF9). Collectively, kVip effectively responded to CEV infection and exerted antiviral function against CEV partially by regulation of inflammatory and interferon responses.

ABSTRACT

Analyzing the sustainable decision-making mechanism between household consumption and education investment can theoretically develop education. This study uses the continuous-time utility model to demonstrate the independent characteristics of consumption and education investment, as well as the principle of decision incompatibility in the decision-making process of the utility maximization problem. Then, we establish a three-phase logarithmic utility model to obtain the intertemporal decision-making path of a family. The analysis shows that the investment allocation ratio between the two phases depends on the expected and discounted level of the offsprings' abilities, while the total investment level is related to parental altruism. When parents, with foresight, factor in prospective transfer payments from progeny, the optimal decision is to maximize their children's ultimate human capital within a given total investment. Education investment not only squeezes out consumption but also promotes consumption in various periods due to future transfer payments. The decision-making process of three typical growth stages indicates that as offspring mature and their human capital increases, parents' willingness to invest in education decreases while self-consumption escalates. This study provides a new perspective and theoretical basis for studying household education expenditure, motivation, and related policy formulation.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Consuming sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) has been linked to the development of various adverse health conditions, including metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). This study evaluated associations between SSB intake and long-term mortality among individuals with MASLD using a nationally representative database. METHODS: This population-based, longitudinal study extracted data of adults aged 20-79 years with MASLD from the USA (US) National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey database 2003-2014. Associations between the amount of SSB intake and all-cause, cancer and cardiovascular disease mortality until the end of 2019 were determined using Cox proportional hazards regression analyses. RESULTS: A total of 12 965 individuals aged 20-79 years who had MASLD were identified in the database. After exclusion, 5630 participants remained for the analyses. This cohort can be extrapolated to 43 420 321 individuals in the entire US after proper weighting. The mean age of the study cohort was 44.1 years. After adjusting for confounders, no significant association was observed between SSB intake (tertile 3 vs. tertile 1) and all-cause [adjusted hazard ratio (aHR): 1.03, 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.60-1.76) or cancer mortality (aHR, 0.41; 95% CI, 0.15-1.16). However, higher SSB intake (tertile 3 vs. tertile 1) was significantly associated with elevated cardiovascular disease mortality risk (aHR = 2.83; 95% CI, 1.01-7.91). CONCLUSION: In US adults with MASLD, high SSB intake is associated with nearly three-fold increased cardiovascular disease mortality risk. The findings underscore the critical need for concerted action on the part of healthcare providers and policymakers.

ABSTRACT

Pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) stands as a significant and prevalent infectious disease in China. Integrating 13 natural and socioeconomic factors, we conduct nine machine learning (ML) models alongside the Tree-Structured Parzen Estimator to predict the monthly PTB incidence rate from 2013 to 2019 in mainland China. With explainable ML techniques, our research highlights that population size, per capita GDP, and PM10 concentration emerge as the primary determinants influencing the PTB incidence rate. We delineate both the independent and interactive impacts of these factors on the PTB incidence rate. Furthermore, crucial thresholds associated with factors influencing the PTB incidence rate are identified. Taking factors that have a positive effect on reducing the incidence rate of PTB as an example, the thresholds at which the effects of factors PM2.5, PM10, O3, and RH on the incidence rate change from increase to decrease are 105.5 µg/m3, 75.5 µg/m3, 90.8 µg/m3, and 72.3 % respectively. Our work will contribute valuable insights for public health interventions.

ABSTRACT

A Cd-MOF was constructed based on 3,5-bis(4-carboxyphenyl) pyridine under solvothermal conditions. Its structure and phase purity were verified by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Thereafter, some studies on the morphology, structure, and luminescent properties of the compound were carried out. The compound exhibited a highly sensitive response to Fe3+, Cr(IV), trinitrophenol (TNP), and colchicine based on the fluorescence-quenching mechanism. The possible mechanism of luminescence quenching was discussed in detail.

ABSTRACT

Cesium lead halide nanostructures have highly tunable optical and optoelectronic properties. Establishing precise control in forming perovskite single-crystal nanostructures is key to unlocking the full potential of these materials. However, studying the growth kinetics of colloidal cesium lead halides is challenging due to their sensitivity to light, electron beam, and environmental factors like humidity. In this study, in situ observations of CsPbBr3-particle dynamics were made possible through extremely low dose liquid cell transmission electron microscopy, showing that oriented attachment is the dominant pathway for the growth of single-crystal CsPbBr3 architectures from primary nanocubes. In addition, oriented assembly and fusion of ligand-stabilized cubic CsPbBr3 nanocrystals are promoted by electron beam irradiation or introduction of polar additives that both induce partial desorption of the original ligands and polarize the nanocube surfaces. These findings advance our understanding of cesium lead halide growth mechanisms, aiding the controlled synthesis of other perovskite nanostructures.
